This Northern Italian varietal is one of Italy’s oldest indigenous grapes with DNA links to Lagrein and Syrah. Its adaptability to granite and volcanic soils make it promising for plantings in the Sierra Foothills. Extremely deep in color, inky purple to almost black. Aromas of blackberry, blueberry, plum with hints of violet, licorice, and loam. Medium to full-bodied on the palate with lively acidity, subtle tannins and flavors of dark fruit, herbs, and minerals. Often compared to a cross between Zinfandel and Syrah for its juicy fruit and savory depth.
